SCS.com This is just what playoff advocates wanted. Several one loss teams vying for a spot in the national championship game, while an underrated undefeated Kansas team just keeps on winning. If every team wins out, should Kansas jump Oregon and LSU? If so, who does Kansas play? If Kansas loses, what makes LSU better then Oklahoma? I will tell you, pollsters and ESPN. More than likely, there will be a BCS controversy at the end of the year, but do not worry, the system will stay the same. No playoff. No plus one. Oklahoma, West Virginia, Missouri, and even Hawaii will likely have no chance to play for a national title this year. At least not without someone losing above them, something that's totally out of their control. Even if there is a huge controversy at the end of the year, and the fans argue for another system, the NCAA will stay put on this issue.

BEST GAME

USC over Cal

This was an important game for both teams. Both needed wins to save their season. USC�s Chauncey Washington ran for 220 yards and a score to lead the Trojans over the Bears. A school known recently for its great QB play has had to rely on the running game this year. QB John David Booty only completed 11 passes for 129 and one touchdown. Cal ran the ball just as well as USC, but they made to many mistakes. With USC leading 24-17 in the pouring rain, Cal had one last chance to tie the game. Cal started their drive at their own 8 yard line. After 3 plays, they were already at the USC 36. However, Nate Longshore threw an arrant pass on the next play which was intercepted by Terrell Thomas to seal the victory for USC.

Runner-Up: Northwestern over Indiana

BIGGEST UPSET

Illinois over Ohio State

Illinois looked like an elite program this weekend. They have finally reached their full potential under Ron Zook. Zook clearly out-coached Jim Tressel, which is the most difficult thing for a college football coach to do. Illinois� spread offense frustrated the highly touted Buckeye defense. Juice Williams threw for 4 touchdowns, but his legs are what won the game. Illinois controlled the ball for over 13 minutes in the 4th quarter, including a drive that started with 8:09 on the clock and ended with 0:00. Ohio State surprised everyone this year and should not be disappointed. This was a rebuilding year for Ohio State, but that is a different term at OSU then it is at other programs. With a win next week, OSU will be heading to the Rose Bowl with an 11-1 record. Illinois should now finish third in the Big Ten, a huge step forward for Illinois.

Runner-Up: Maryland over Boston College

BEST TEAM PERFORMANCE

Tennessee

Tennessee barely out-gained Arkansas, but they rolled 34-13. Erik Ainge, like usual, was very efficient. He threw 2 touchdowns and avoided any turnovers. Tennessee held Felix Jones to 3 yards on 3 carries, and he was averaging 9.4 yards a carry coming into the game. Heisman hopeful Darren McFadden ran for 117 yards, but was held out of the end zone. Tennessee is not flashy, but they get the job done. The Vols have won three straight, and have to beat rivals Vanderbilt and Kentucky to advance to the SEC title game in Atlanta.

Runner-Up: Georgia

MOST DISAPPOINTING TEAM PERFORMANCE

Miami (FL)

This weekend was Miami�s last game in the Orange Bowl. Good riddance. Miami embarrassed themselves and their fans losing to Virginia 48-0. Virginia is ranked 95th in total offense. Miami is known for their tough defense. And Virginia scored 48 points! They turned the ball over five times and did not manage to gain 200 yards of total offense. This program has not been the same since Ohio State beat them in the 2002 national championship game.

Runner-Up: Connecticut

PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

Kevin Smith - RB - UCF

This is the best player you know nothing about. Smith ran for 320 yards and 4 touchdowns to lead UCF over UAB. UCF is a very impressive team that deserves top 25 votes if they win out.

Tim Tebow - QB - Florida

The Heisman is his if he wants it. Nothing should get in the way of Tim Tebow from winning the most prestigious award in college football. Against South Carolina he ran for 126 yards and five touchdowns! He also managed to throw for 304 yards and two touchdowns. He is easily the best player in college football.

Joe Ganz - QB - Nebraska

After giving up 76 points to Kansas, Nebraska must have learned a thing or two. Led by QB Joe Ganz, Nebraska scored 73 points against Kansas State. Ganz threw for 510 yards and 7 touchdowns. Did Ganz save Bill Callahan from losing his job? I and Nebraska fans across the nation hope not.

Anthony Johnson - CB - Mississippi State

Rarely do I give an award to someone who made one good play, but this is a special occasion. Mississippi State was down 9-3 with under a minute to go in the 1st half. Alabama was inside the 5, sitting pretty. Mississippi State pressured John Parker Wilson, forcing an poor pass into the end zone. The ball was picked off by Anthony Johnson, who returned it 100 yards for a score. This gave MSU a 10-9 lead and the momentum it needed for a win. Sylvester Croom and his Bulldogs are now bowl eligible.

Tyrod Taylor - QB - Virginia Tech

Taylor did not start the game, but once he got in, he played like a starter. The athletic QB threw for 204 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran for 93 yards and a score. Virginia Tech controls its own destiny in the ACC.

LOOKING FORWARD

Now that OSU lost, any top 5 upset would be astronomical. Oklahoma, West Virginia, and Missouri are praying that LSU or Oregon lose. If you are looking for an upset, week 13 is more favorable than week 12. Ohio State will play Michigan in the best rivalry in football. The winner gets a trip to the Rose Bowl. Oregon plays Arizona, which should be an easy victory. Hawaii will travel to Nevada as the Warriors attempt to remain unbeaten. Georgia will battle Kentucky for bragging rights in the SEC, but neither team can make it to Atlanta without a Tennessee loss. Tennessee will host a Vanderbilt team that needs one win for bowl eligibility. Missouri plays Kansas State, who gave up 73 points to Nebraska. Kansas will meet Iowa State, who is winless in Big 12 play. Boston College will try to end its two game losing streak against Clemson. West Virginia will try to remain the national title hunt against Cincinnati. Lastly, Oklahoma will face a Texas Tech team that has allowed 180 points in their four losses.
